Prayagraj, December 23: Urban Development Minister A.K. Sharma declared that the much-anticipated Mahakumbh is just days away and urged residents to unite in making Prayagraj a global marvel. Speaking at the launch of a seven-day cleanliness awareness campaign, “Swachhata Mahakumbh,” held at Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad Park, Sharma emphasized the significance of collective effort in beautifying the city for the grand event.
During the event, the minister unveiled the trophy for the Swachhata Prayag Premier League and encouraged participating students, hailing their commitment to the cause.
“We have worked extensively in the past for Mahakumbh, but the current efforts are unprecedented,” Sharma said. “Prayagraj is evolving into a clean, divine, and grand destination. Over the last 18 months, projects worth ₹15,000 crore have been underway, transforming the city with a focus on Mahakumbh.”
Sharma highlighted that ₹2,100 crore has been allocated by the central government for Mahakumbh, with additional contributions from the state government. Beyond this, ₹7,000 crore worth of developmental projects are in progress, including enhancements to pilgrimage sites such as Bharadwaj Ashram.
Transforming Mahakumbh into a Unique Experience
The minister revealed that for the first time, visitors would be able to enjoy a scenic drive along the Ganga’s banks, marveling at the grandeur of the Mahakumbh. “New ghats have been built, and 1.5 lakh toilets have been constructed to ensure a smooth experience for an anticipated 40 crore pilgrims,” he said.
Reflecting on his personal connection with the city, Sharma shared, “Prayagraj is like my second home. I studied here from 1980 to 1988 and even taught at the university for a while. I appeal to every resident to contribute to keeping this city clean and beautiful.”
Seven-Day Cleanliness Drive Announced

Sharma also emphasized the importance of the final cleanup efforts. “In the coming days, cleaning will be critical. Resources, including manpower and equipment from municipal corporations across the state, have been mobilized to ensure Prayagraj shines among the world’s most beautiful cities,” he stated. He called on everyone to participate actively in the seven-day cleanliness awareness campaign.
Mayor’s Call for Unity and Dedication
Mayor Umesh Ganesh Kesarwani expressed gratitude to the minister for allocating resources from across the state. He lauded the municipal commissioner and his team for their tireless efforts and urged residents to join the movement.
“Our mission is to make Prayagraj a benchmark for cleanliness,” Kesarwani said. “Let us work together to create a city that pilgrims and tourists from around the world will praise as unparalleled in its beauty and sanctity.”
The program saw attendance from prominent figures, including City North MLA Harsh Vajpayee, Phulpur MLA Deepak Patel, Municipal Commissioner Chandramohan Garg, councilors, and other dignitaries.
